Saga of the misbehaving drain

One Thursday, Linda forgot to put the clothes washer drain hose into the toilet causing a massive flood in our downstairs bathroom, with water flowing out into the kitchen area as well. Because the water wouldn’t drain out through the clogged pipes, we were bailing water with a large dust pan and plastic pan. We called the landlord and he came to find us still getting 2-3 inches of water out of the bathroom floor. He brought the magic acid, which worked a miracle the month before by cleaning out the pipe (after a small explosion), but it did nothing this time. He hired some workmen who used a plumbing snake with no success. They ended up breaking up our cement backyard in several places looking to find the drain pipe leading from the bathroom. No success. Finally the owner called the city to come flush the drain pipes. They came and looked, made an appointment to come on Monday and ended by telling us not to let water down our drain pipes. We thought, “It’s only a few days, it’ll be OK.”
The appointed time came and went with no workmen & no city truck. We called to find out the reason for the delay. We were told that they workmen would not come. What!!! Didn’t we schedule an appointment 3 days before? When Linda heard this she started crying not knowing when we’d be able to take showers, wash our hair and wash dishes without having to use buckets and pouring the used water in the toilet. She called the landlord and he said that he had already filled out the right paperwork. He then called the city and found out that the workmen were helping their supervisor build a house, but they would stop and come help “today”. As we sat down for lunch, the workmen did come with their large red water truck to flush the drains (picture is of a similar truck). Hallelujah, success!! It’s been one day and water is still flowing down the bathroom drain pipe and no flooding.

U. S. Team is Magical

A team from Oxford, Mississippi came to Krabi. They did juggling, magic tricks, drew pictures, and did mime. They had fun going into markets, schools, doing street evangelism and performances at 2 churches in Krabi city. During street evangelism and markets, Thais accepted tracts as they saw magic tricks and got balloon animals for their children. A show in the night market of Krabi city was a venue for presenting the Gospel as well as passing out tracts to Thais. Their mime showed that our bad actions can be brought under the control of the Holy Spirit through accepting the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Students as well as teachers were enthralled by the show. Could you do this at a school in America?
Thank You Mississippi Team!

Pa’s Wake-Up Call

Pa was driving her motorcycle early in the morning. Her 19 year son was on the back. As she was thinking about something her husband said, she fell asleep. Her wake-up call was running into a large cement mileage marker. She sustained injuries to her abdomen, bruised her ribs, broke her left arm in several places and separated her shoulder. While Bow, her son, hit his head resulting in 9 stitches in his forehead. Because of her internal bleeding, the local Khao Phanom district hospital sent her to the provincial hospital in Krabi city for surgery. Staying in a hot hospital ward with about 30 other women, she waited on the surgery.
During her hospital stay, our team, and then members of the local Baptist church went and prayed for Pa. After our prayers her bleeding stopped and she didn’t have to have the operation on her abdomen. Two days later her broken arm was set and the doctors waited a few more days to make sure she was OK. Pa believed that God had answered our prayers for her. Pray for her to be patient in her recovery and be faithful in attending the cell group.

Chikungunya – Funny Name for the Effects of a Mosquito Bite

Linda got bitten by a Aedes Mosquito causing a fever, headaches and swollen joints and muscles. While the fever and rash last approximately 8 days, the fever settled into swollen joints and muscles. After 3 weeks of pain and little relief, staying at home and not recovering. Richard took her to the doctor at the hospital on the 23rd. She was given a shot and medicine to help control the swollen joints and muscles. Most of the pain has left and she has returned to work. This Thanksgiving Linda feels very thankful to God for getting better.

Prayer and Praise

1. Pray for members and leaders of Krabi Baptist Church to seek God first in their
daily lives.
2. Pray that members at Krabi Baptist will enthusiastically work with us to

5. Pray for Richard & me to not let other activities draw us away from our quiet
time with God.
6. Pray for us to see God daily at work in our lives and in establishing churches
in Khao Phanom (Cow Pa-nom) and Blai PraYa districts.
7. Pray for adults and children in our cell groups to see God working in their daily
lives.

Radio Program

"The Happy Family" radio program from Voice of Peace began airing in Khao Phanom. The program incorporates current events, and advice for the family coming from the Bible.
The radio station was most pleased with the program. It airs from 8:15 - 8:45 each morning. We are praying that God will use the program to soften the ground and turn many Thais in Khao Phanom to Christ.

Flooded Bathroom

On September 28th we walked into the ground floor bathroom. Water had begun backing up. We thought, “Oh no! This was one of those times during the year that the bathroom backed up.” We poured soda down the drain hoping that would cure the situation. On Wednesday a couple visited from Singapore. To our embarrassment, the man went to use the downstairs bathroom and a noxious smell greeted him as he opened the door. The water had backed up all the way to the door (about 2 inches) ready to overflow into the kitchen. He had to use our upstairs bathroom. While Linda talked to them, Richard bailed out the bathroom, cleaned and dried the floor. However, our visitor had washed his hands after using the bathroom and this caused the floor to flood again! Richard again went in to bail out the bathroom floor, clean and dry it.
Friday we called the landlord because we had used caustic soda to clean the drain and it did not help. We heard that the city had a service to clear drains. We asked our landlord to call the city to get help. About a half hour later the doorbell rang. The landlord came with a large bottle which he said the workers at his school used to clean the school’s drains. As he was pouring the liquid down the drain, there was rumbling in the pipes, a small explosion, and a column of steam spouted about 10 feet into the air. As the steam first came out the landlord jumped back and looked stunned. Then he tried to escape the bathroom as a putrid smell filled the room. We opened the back door and windows and brought a fan to clear the air. It took awhile. Then the landlord insisted on returning to the bathroom to pour more of the acid down the pipes. This time he was ready as he poured the liquid, but the column of steam was only about a foot high. Praise God this miracle acid drain cleaner worked & the drain pipes continue to be clear!

Training in Bangkok

The middle of September we went to Bangkok for training to help us in strategy, evangelization and training of nationals. It was a very upbeat meeting which reminded us of some of the things we had let go by the wayside. We practiced some of the principals given during the training. As we discussed some of the realities of the work, we recognized that God is greater than problems that we have. We also talked with our fellow m’s to see what they are doing.

Car Free Day

Richard rides about 3 times a week in the evenings with 3 – 6 Thai men. They bike about 30-45 kilometers a time. Richard sees his bicycling activities as part of establishing community relationships. This year he again participated in the province’s celebration of Car Free Day. Many Thais from around the province and about 10 westerners rode around Krabi city. Later they ate a meal together and joined in lowering the country’s flag and singing the national anthem in the evening.

Prayer and Praise

1. Pray that Thai Christians at Krabi Baptist Church will have the vision to reach their family, friends, and neighbors so Thais will come to Christ.
2. As we go out each week, pray that we will see where the Holy Spirit is working.
3. Continue to pray that God opens the hearts of Thais in Khao Phanom through the Christian radio program we are airing there.
4. Pray for more Thai Christians to join us in witnessing and teaching in Khao Phanom and Blai Praya.
5. Pa and Bal were in a motorcycle accident. Pray for their rapid healing and their family to become committed to Christ.
6. As Mr. Kingsley has more opportunity to share God with his students and fellow teachers at Blai Praya Witayakom High School, pray for many to know Jesus as Savior.
7. Pray that Baptist Churches in Khao Phanom and Blai Praya will be begun soon.

Seeker Group Meeting

On our arrival in Toong Pru, only 2 people were initially willing to go with us to a group meeting in Khao Din where we were bringing 3 groups together for a special program. What a shock for us since the group members had been excited about going to the combined meeting just the week before! We had secured permission from their parents in advance. We began talking to the adults and parents of the group. Knowing that our prayer partners were praying for resistance to be broken down, 8 plus a baby finally went with us to Khao Din. For most, this was a big event traveling 17 miles to another area. The members of the Toong Pru group seldom leave their own village.

Among the lush rubber trees of the countryside, our meeting of the 3 seeker groups in Khao Phanom took place. The Thais were so excited to be among others who studied the Bible. Most thought that they were alone their own small groups. But with 22 in attendance singing and praising the Lord, they were greatly encouraged! Besides singing, the group was treated to testimonies from the pastor of Krabi Baptist Church & Khun Lek, one of the members. The story of Daniel was taught emphasizing that God was with all believers in all situations (see picture). For a craft, A. Nantana had the members make a woman keychain using yarn. Of course, you can't have a meeting in Thailand with food. There was plenty to eat including fruits, cakes and home made cookies. We knew the program was a success as several participants told us that they day was "sunuk", meaning lots of fun.

We are so thankful for your prayer intercession for this combined meeting. Your prayers were the turning point in getting permission for the people from Toong Pru to go with us to Khao Din. It was a joyful experience for those who so desperately need to know Christ as Savior.

Mobile Medical Follow-UP

The search for mobile clinic patients led over many dirt roads with literally potholes everywhere and also over fairly smooth paved roads. Our adventure took place on bright sunny days and dark rainy and muddy days. The search led us to talk to those patients from the mobile medical clinic, who had expressed interest in the Gospel. Many wanted more free medicine. However, 99% of them rejected the Gospel presentation we gave on our visit.

A teacher from the school where the clinic was held has indicated interest. As we visited with his wife and him, they had questions about God and the Bible. We plan on returning to see him to find out more about his interest. It is our hope that Sa-ner and his family will come to know Jesus as Savior.

How will they hear unless someone tells them

Our missionary colleagues in Phangna, the Richards, were kind enough to loan us their volunteer team from Florida for 2 days. On Sunday afternoon, the team passed out tracts. Then on Monday morning they went to BlayPraYa High School. This Christian volunteer team was divided into groups to give a fun English experience for the Thai students. Each group rotated into classrooms of excited 8th and 9th grade students. By the end of the morning, around 500 students had heard a Gospel presentation (some students for the first time) in both Thai and English.

As we have been praying for the students of this school to know God, the school has hired a new teacher. PRAISE God the new teacher is a Christian from the country of Cameron! What a great influence he will be among the students as he coaches soccer, teaches English and gets to know the students and staff.

Prayer and Praise

1. Praise God that we found all the people (except 1), who had expressed interest from the mobile clinic.
2. Praise God for the great combined meeting of all our groups from Khao Phanom.
3. Praise God that A. Nantana is experiencing much better health in her pregnancy.
4. September first in Khao Phanom, we begin airing a Christian radio program. Pray that the radio program produces much fruit for God’s kingdom.
5. Continue to pray for more adults to join in Bible Study with us.
6. Pray that we will be led to those Thais, who are hungry to know God.
7. Pray for Nan-ta-porn, Chai-ya-porn, Jom-long, and Sa-ner to soon know Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Bird and Brani

One day passing out tracts in Khao Phanom, our Thai co-worker, A. Nantana met Brani. Nantana explained that we were followers of Jesus and wanted to tell others about God. Brani said that she followed a Japanese Buddhist cult. After exchanging thoughts about what they believed, Brani asked A. Nantana to send her a VCD on the life of Christ and Christian book. The following weeks we returned to see if she had read what had been given her. Brani said that she had and each time wanted more books.
While we were sitting on her front porch one afternoon, Brani’s son, Bird came up. He asked what we were doing. After telling him we were followers of Jesus, he disappeared into the house. A few minutes later, he returned with a Gideon’s Thai/English New Testament. He began asking questions about Christians, prayer, and God. We answered his questions for about 45 minutes. Then we asked if he and his mother would like to study the Bible with us. We agreed upon a time beginning the following Tuesday.
The following Tuesday we were visiting some people in Khao Phanom, when Linda’s telephone rang. It was Bird wanting to know if we were coming to teach. He had wanted us to come earlier than we had promised. After finishing our visit, we went immediately to Bird’s house. Bird had lots of questions about God and why God wasn’t answering his prayers.
As we were eating lunch the following week, Bird called Linda’s phone again. This time he wanted to know if we were coming to his house since it was raining. He was pleased that we were coming & wouldn’t allow a hard rain to stop us. We talked about Christian baptism and the Lord’s Supper. To our surprise, he wanted to be baptized because he had already made up his mind to follow Jesus! We asked him to study more before he committed to such a big step.
When people are empty and without meaning in life, GOD’S WORD draws people to HIMSELF. Keep praying for Brani & Bird.

Annual Meeting

Approximately 300+ persons attended our organizations annual meeting for SE Asia. Our new leader gave much encouragement and his ideas for a new direction in our area was very motivating. We heard practical and inspiring preaching and uplifting music from a church in Alabama.
Richard & I spent some of the time helping out in the office set-up for the meeting. This gave us a chance to serve others and we kept pretty busy. We had excellent help from several volunteers in getting things set up, keeping track of equipment, and directing people to the right rooms for meetings. Everyone had safe travel to and from the meeting. Thanks for your prayers!!

Katie

What can a person do in 6 weeks of teaching in a Thai school?
After her shock of sleeping on a pallet on the floor each night, “squatty potties” (toilets), and cold dip baths, Katie adjusted well. Living at the school in one of the houses provided for teachers has been good for Katie. She has learned to eat a variety of Thai foods daily with the teachers . Many times trying to smile while eating foods she didn’t like. In the evening she exercised with them.
At her desk, Katie had her Bible, Christian tracts, and an Evangi-Cube. During long breaks, she read her Bible and did a Bible Study. When students and teachers asked her about what she was doing, Katie had an opportunity to tell them about God. During her English classes, Katie taught songs like “My God is so big” to her students too. Before leaving to return to America, her students lined the way out of the school to say “Goodbye” to her.
During her time here, Katie has had opportunity to get close to two teachers, A. Nit and A. Biap. As she got closer to these teachers, they opened up and told her about their struggles in life. Her housemate, Nit, wanted a Bible to read and has been asking questions about what she has read. Nit was impressed by the geneology of Jesus in Matthew chapter one because of her Chinese background. Once back in America, Katie will keep in contact with her new Thai friends and will be emailing some favorite scripture verses for A. Nit to read. Another teacher, who was closed, has begun asking questions, as well. Two students have shown interest in God and asked for a visit and more Christian literature.
Before leaving a teacher told Katie, “Thank you for coming and bringing so much good to our school.”
What can a person do in 6 weeks in a Thai? They can be a good friend and share the love Jesus with others.

Prayer and Praise

1. Praise God for the inspiring annual meeting and our time in the office which helped us better understand the inner working of such a big meeting.
2. Praise God for Katie’s 6 weeks in Blai Praya which produced some Thais (students and teachers) wanting to know more about God and one requesting a Bible to read.
3. Pray for us to find the all of the people from the Mobile Clinic, who said they wanted to know God.
4. Nantana has been pretty sick with morning sickness and a bleeding stomach ulcer. Pray for Nantana’s health to improve.
5. Pray that all the members of the Tung Pru group will soon accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.
6. Pray for more adult Thais to join in studying the Bible with us in Khao Phanom.
7. Pray for our plans to encourage our groups by bringing them together soon.
8. Praise God for good results from our annual medical tests.

MOBILE MEDICAL CLINIC

We arrived a few minutes early. Tables and chairs were already set up like we had asked. Crews of Thais and Americans from the Medical Team began setting up the pharmacy, filling bags with tracts, and setting up the tables for the doctors to examine patients. At first, the Thais were slow to come. However, Thais began coming once they found out about the Western Doctors and the free “colorful” medicine from America. It was a busy day with three doctors seeing 278 patients. Medicine was distributed for problems related to skin, muscle ache and diabetes. Since the clinic was held at an elementary school, a program for the children was held teaching them good dental hygiene, physical health and English.
Witnessing to patients resulted in 25 Thais expressing interest in God and 10 others saying they had accepted Christ as Savior. One of those saying he believed was a 72 year old Buddhist monk from a temple across the street from the school. However, only through follow-up will we know for sure whether or not the Thais that visited the clinic really believed. We have begun visiting those who received treatment at the clinic.

Persecution

The week following the mobile clinic, while we were teaching our weekly cell group in Tung Bru village, the father of the family came in drunk. He began telling us about a confrontation he had with the village headman. The father, Khun Ran, said that the headman told him “to drive the missionaries from his house!” The father refused. Then the headman said he would come personally and force the missionaries out. The father said “No, you won’t!” As the father was telling this story to us, he said: “You have shown concern and helped our family. We are indebted to you.”

This brave stand by the father will affect his relationship with neighbors. The headman could also cut this family off from aid that may be given by the government in the future. Pray that this family will understand the Gospel message and become firm, stable believers in Jesus Christ. Pray for this village to be a stronghold for God.

Katie

Katie came out of the building, just as we arrived to pick her up from the Krabi airport. Her next day was an introduction to Blai Pra Ya High School. She was given a beautiful bouquet of Pandanus leaves and a delicious meal was prepared for lunch by a teacher in the English language department. She also got to meet some of her students in the classroom. They were so excited that Katie had finally arrived!
Officially, Katie came to teach English at the High School. During her spare hours, she is telling people about God. She uses opportunities like reading her Bible and everyday situations in which she can explain her Christian values to her fellow teachers and students. Katie wants to teach teachers English in the evening and use the Bible as part of the curriculum. Please pray that her Thai supervisor will approve the curriculum.

Prayer and Praise

1. Praise God that Katie has come to Blay Pra Ya to teach English and be a witness. Pray for the Holy Spirit to open the hearts of the teachers & students who hear the gospel.
2. Praise God for the success of the Mobile Clinic in opening doors by demonstrating Christian love.
3. Pray that Khun Ran’s family will soon understand the Gospel message and come to faith in Jesus Christ.
4. Pray for the follow-up from the mobile clinic to produce fruit for God’s kingdom.
5. Pray for m’s to have safe travel to and from our annual Mission meeting.
6. Pray for members of Krabi Baptist to be real soul winners and the church to grow.
7. Pray for good results from the medical tests & doctor visits we will do in Bangkok.

Cell Group at Am’s House

We called San before we left for Khao Phanom to ask if he’d like to study the Bible with us. He said “Yes”. We picked him up on the way to Am’s house. Once there we saw only Am’s family, but within 5-10 minutes there were 16 people. We began by singing some songs out of a songbook while Nantana played the guitar. After that we began the lesson reading some verses from the Bible about the existence of God. Then we filled in blanks on a study guide. Before ending we prayed thanking God for so many coming the first meeting and the fun we had.
We continue to teach at Am's house even though she has returned to college. Pray for her family to be faithful in studying God's Word.

Our daughter and family visit

We waited anxiously at the Krabi Airport to pick up our daughter, Jamie and granddaughter, Natalie, on May 15th. What a great time we had showing them the beach and other interesting sites nearby. Jamie had fun eating Thai food during her stay.
She also visited friends in Phuket, in Penang and a high school reunion in Penang. Her husband, Zac came for a week and it was a joy to have time with him. It was fun having our daughter and granddaughter around and be able to be grandparents close up.

Disappointments

We began teaching 28 year old Gaan Chronological Bible Stories. During the two lessons we taught, she was an eager learner. As a matter if fact, she couldn't get enough study and wanted to find a church close to her home to begin worshiping God! But something happened. The following week, she wasn’t home for her scheduled Bible study and didn’t answer her phone. Gaan knows our phone number but hasn't attempted to contact us about further Bible studies in her home. Not wanting to embarrass her or make an unwelcomed visit, we've left it up to the Holy Spirit to renew the spiritual hunger in her heart.

Another disappoint this past month was San, a 14 year old boy we met after receiving a response card. San like Gaan was very enthusiastic to learn about God. We took him to a brand new cell group and he was impressed with the singing and the Bible study. He asked if we had other cell groups he could attend. We took him to a second group and received the same avid response. However, we needed to change the time of one cell group. This meant San would get home later at night. Thus, we asked him to get permission from his parents which he failed to do. Upon finding this out, we politely refused to take him to the cell group explaining we could not break the level of trust with his parents. San didn't understand and has failed to attend anymore cell groups.

This kind of thing happens more than we'd like to say. In a Buddhist country, it takes so long and so many visits before we find a person even remotely interested in the Gospel. Consequently, our disappointment when we see promising people fall away. But what a reminder that we are in a spiritual battle as described in the Bible. Satan has a firm grip on those he has held captive for years and doesn’t want to turn any of them loose.

Prayer & Praise

1. Praise God for the cell group in Khao Din which is averaging 10 people. Pray for more interested adults to continually attend.
2. Katie will teach in a Blai Praya high school for 6 weeks during the summer. Pray for many students and teachers to become interested in God through her work there.
3. Continue praying for the one day Mobile Medical Clinic to be held in Khao Phanom on June 15th to bear fruit for God’s kingdom.
4. Pray that the Holy Spirit will re-ignite a hunger for God with Gaan and San, who have shown an interest in knowing God in the past.
5. As we follow up on those interested from the Khao Phanom Mobile Medical Clinic, pray for adult Thais to be interested in studying the Bible with us.
6. Praise God for the recent trip that our younger daughter’s family made to visit us.
7. Pray that God will bring abundant fruit from passing out tracts and other contacts.
8. 8. At our annual meeting, Linda has been asked to work in the office. Since this is not part of her usual activities, pray that she will successfully complete her duties there.

Songkran - Thai New Year

April 13-15 was the Thai New Year. The Thai calendar dates time from the death of Buddha. This is the year 2552. The first day is the day that Southern Thais go and pour water on the shoulder of their elders as a blessing. Nowadays, it is a day of fun. Everyone expects to get wet. If you venture outside your house, there are truckloads of children and adults with large urns of water. Water guns abound and everyone gets wet. This whole week most Thais return to their hometown and visit relatives and friends. On the second day of the New Year, we went to the beach at Ao Nang (Awl Nang) and walked.

Richard's father's funeral

In February Richard’s father, Red, had an operation. The operation went well. Red was stable and he was sent back to the small hospital at the senior village where he lived. Red's condition and our emotions went up and down the month of March. Our daughter, Caroline sent emails and made phone calls keeping the whole family informed about Red’s condition. In an effort to find out what was really happening, both our daughters, Caroline and Jamie flew to Florida to visit their grandfather on March 19th. On March 22, Red died. Red's will was read at the senior village. He stipulated that Richard do the funeral service. We made plans to return to Virginia. We weren't able to get a flight to America for 4 days. Even though we were anxious to go, Richard used the time to prepare for the funeral. Once in Newport News we were welcomed and supported by our family and church there. We connected with friends and relatives there. At the graveside service, Richard did a great job. When the sailors presented a US flag to Richard's younger brother, he cried. Two days later we returned to Thailand thankful for the opportunity to be with family at this time.

San - Returned Mail

A response card arrived in our mailbox in early February asking for literature and stating that a 14 years old boy wanted to become a Christian! We were excited & promptly sent the literature & a VCD that he requested by mail. Later we received another response card from him asking for the same literature! This was puzzling since we assumed he'd already received it by mail. But we sent him the literature again. Two weeks later it was returned to us. In following up, A. Nantana called the boy to see if the address was correct. He said that the address was correct. We again sent out the material. It was once more returned to us!!! We were frustrated and called again asking if we could come visit & bring the literature. The boy asked us to come to his "school" in May when school opened again. However, on April 21st, San called us and asked where his literature was! We explained what had happened. This time he asked us to come to his HOME. We did! We gave him the LONG AWAITED material and talked to him, his sister, and father about God. The fact that San asked us to visit in his home was a brave step to take for a teenager. By allowing us to visit he was publicly saying to his Buddhist family that he wanted to know more about God. Pray that San will study the Bible, understand the Gospel, and believe in what Jesus did for him.(NOW the rest of the story: Trying to find a woman in January, we visited Dead Elephant School in Khao Phanom. In the process, we passed out tracts and booklets to the teachers and children there. San's younger sister received one of the Christian booklets at the school. She shared it with her brother, San.)

AM

A friend was eager for us to meet a girl that he knew. We went to the Khao Phanom District Office and found Am working as an intern there. She invited us to her house and got off the rest of the morning to take us there. After driving 15 kilometers on paved roads into the countryside, we turned onto a dirt road. Traveling about 2 1/2 kilometers, we made a left onto another dirt road another 1 1/2 kilometers. Once we parked the truck, we walked another 200 meters among rubber trees to meet her family. They were all surprised and glad that we had come. Am’s grandfather had been a Christian. Since her father moved to Krabi province (10 years ago) the family didn’t go to church because they were too far into the countryside to conveniently go (the closest church being about 60 kilometers away) and their only vehicle was a motorcycle for 5 people. We talked to them about God and they asked us to return. During our next visit, we asked if we could come back to teach. We are excited to announce that we will begin teaching Am's family on May 9! Please be praying for many adults to show up.

Krabi Boat Races

Teams from different villages practiced paddling their long narrow boats in the streams, canals, and rivers nearby. Finally the big days arrived. Racing teams, other villagers and tourists traveled to Krabi City April 17-19th for the annual boat races. For those three days the river was filled with boats racing or people in boats watching the races. Teams from different villages and with different colored shirts raced in the morning. As with all good celebrations there was lots of excitement and plenty of food to be bought from local venders.

Prayer & Praise

1. Praise God for some promising leads on starting cell groups.
2. Pray that as the Holy Spirit works in the lives of San, Meow, Oh, Dom, & Am (Khao Phanom), they will receive Jesus as Savior drawing their family and friends to God.

Nantana - Thai Co-Worker

Many of you have been praying for us to get a Thai Co-Worker. To our surprise, we got an email from a friend in Bangkok saying that Ahjohn Nantana would be moving to Krabi. She has been married about 6 months and her husband is now working with the Presbyterian Church in town. She is a graduate of the Baptist Seminary in Bangkok. She is now a valuable asset to our work. Praise God for her work!

Nine Years Later

The following is exerted from the recent email of a former Journeygirl, who worked with us in the south many years ago:
"I am so excited. . . one of my former students in Thailand has decided to become a Christian! I just had to share. . she was one of the students that I was closest to, but she never seemed that interested in knowing more about Jesus or the Bible. She moved to the States a couple of years ago and we have kept in touch. I've also continued praying for her. . . She is studying the Bible with a friend, and I think she plans to join "Fellowship Church" next Sunday. She even has a Thai friend now who is also a Christian! This is just such a blessing and an encouragement. . . I didn't see any students come to Christ while in Thailand, but now, nine years after I first met Pique, she is becoming a Christian! I feel so glad that God used me to plant a seed. Others have helped to water it, and God made it grow! I hope this is an encouragement to those of you who may be praying for someone who isn't a Christian. . sometimes it takes a long time!! Please pray for Pique (sounds like "Bic") to grow in her new faith!

English for Police

We agreed on a date to start teaching English to Police in Blai Praya. We went to the station only to be told that they weren’t ready for us. We agreed on another day and we have been teaching them about how to deal with different situations in which police might need English with tourists. It has been fun getting to know them. Each week we display a Bible Verse and teach the meaning. Thai Christians have given their testimony about how they became a Christian. At the end of each class we give out Christian tracts, VCDs, and booklets, and sang Christian songs in English.

Prayer & Praise

1. Praise God for A. Nan-ta-na coming to work with us. Pray for us to work together well.
2. Pray that we will be able to start and sustain a strictly adult group at (Tung Pru village) Pru Thial, Khao Phanom.
3. We intend to teach English to Blai Praya police 2 more times. Pray that their hearts will be open to hear and receive God’s Word as truth for their lives.
4. Continue praying for Khun Lee, a Thai Muslim, who is studying the Bible with Richard. Pray for Lee to understand and accept God’s salvation through Jesus Christ.
5. Pray that the pastor and members of Krabi Baptist to understand the importance of evangelism in the growth of the church and be active in our ministry in the province.
6. Pray for more Bible studies to be started through us in Khao Phanom and Blai Praya. Pray especially for Khun Bia and neighbors to begin studying.
7.Pray for Thais to be touched by the Holy Spirit, believe in the work of Jesus and be discipled to be strong Christians.

Children's Day in Khao Phanom

Saturday morning January 10 at 8:10 we got a call from the Khao Phanom City office telling us that we were late for the beginning of the annual Children’s Day Program. Our intention was to be at the city office at 9AM (not realizing until the phone call that the program began earlier at 8). But we still had to wait for 2 other missionary friends who were going with us to help. They too were unaware of the time change. When they arrived at the designated meeting point, we were still 35 minutes from the Children’s Day destination. Upon arrival, we immediately began making balloon animals. Our English friends, Wayne and Wendy Robinson, were pumping up balloons as fast as they could, but not fast enough for the kids. Then 2 non-Christian Thai friends, along with 3 other Thai men we didn’t know, had pity and came over to help pump balloons. Thanks to them we were finally able to keep up with the number of children wanting balloon animals. We stood for 3 ½ hours making around 1,000 balloon animals and passing out picture booklets on the life of Jesus. At the end, everyone was very tired. Fingers were red and sore from tying knots in the balloons and legs wobbly from standing. However, everyone had the gratification of knowing that the Word of God got into the hands of many children and their parents. (We forgot our camera. The file picture above is from last year’s event)

Class for Seekers and New Christians

This group began out of Richard’s concern that some Thais who had been baptized several months ago were not being discipled at Krabi Baptist Church. Thus, he started teaching Chronological Stories in Thai at the church. Each Sunday morning he has four adults come regularly. These young adults are either new in the faith or in the case of one young man, a Muslim. When finished with the course, they will have a strong foundation in the Christian faith. Pray for God to work in a mighty way among these Thais attending.

Sickness

Thailand was blessed with some wonderfully cool weather in January. However, it brought Richard & I ear infections, sore throats, bronchitis, tonsillitis and the flu. So far, two weeks of sickness. Normally, Thais go to the government hospital for medical care. There are general clinic times from 8-12 and then from 1-3 in the afternoon in which one can see dermatologists, ENT or orthopedic specialists, and even psychiatrists. Normally, we go to a private doctor’s clinic, but some days it is inconvenient for our schedule, so we go to the hospital. The last time at the hospital we waited about two and half hours to see the doctor and get medicine. However, you can’t complain very much when the cost for doctor and medicine is less than $35.

Prayer & Praise

1. Praise God for the help we got from Wendy and Wayne Robinson and three non-Christians blowing up balloons and being able to pass out 1,000 booklets (on the Life of Jesus) on Children’s Day.
2. Continue to pray that the adults and children in Tung Pru will understand the truth from the Bible lessons and become part of God’s family.
3. Recently we have met Thais who say that they are Christians. However, they have no real interest in studying the Bible. Pray that some of these will become open and join us in starting churches in Khao Phanom and Blai Praya districts.
4. Pray that as we teach English to Blai Praya police, that their will be a spiritual hunger to know more about Christ.
5. Pray for God to give us many natural opportunities to proclaim the Gospel with Thais as we go about our daily lives.
6. Lee, a Thai Muslim, is studying the Bible with Richard. Pray that Lee will become more open and accept God’s salvation through Jesus Christ.
7. Pray that the members of Krabi Baptist will become more evangelical and active in our ministry in the province.

Trip to America

We had a wonderful and busy trip to help our daughter, Jamie, with her new baby, Natalie. We spent many pleasant minutes holding and caring for Natalie. We visited Richard’s father in Florida and made pictures for his Christmas mailing. It was good to have fellowship and help get him some extra special gifts including a dancing Santa Bear which sang "Santa Baby". We also saw the daughter of a missionary friend, who we had not seen in years.

Teaching in Tung Pru

God amazes us each week in Tung Pru with the Thais we teach, who are ready and waiting for us to come. Despite problems in understanding the stories of God, they still are glad that we come to teach. (To unbelievers who have never heard about God it is difficult to grasp the Christian message which is so strange and foreign to them.) The students are continually in competition to get the right answers to the questions that are asked. One of the students is a new mother, Pua and her husand, Moo, who we gave a Children’s Bible Story book in Thai and they have been reading it every night before bed. Pray that all those who come to the group will begin understanding God’s message of redemption.

Junior & Senior High School Programs

What a blessing!! Your prayers were answered, but not in ways that Richard and I thought. The two students from America couldn’t come for various reasons, even though one made it as far as Tokyo. A missionary from near Bangkok, two from Phuket and two more from Ao Nang in Krabi came to help. In addition, a Thai, who lives at Krabi Church played the guitar, and a mother and two of her college-age children helped out as translators & acted in the skit. We had fun with American Christmas traditions, the Christmas story, singing carols, giving testimonies, leading games and a performing a mime. Since not every one of the westerners came to all the schools, we adapted roles, as needed. Each student received a tract and some candy and each of the English teachers received a newspaper and a VCD about Christmas with the Gospel message in it. A Thai Bible was also given for each of the eight school libraries where we did programs. Teachers at all the schools appreciated our coming and the Gospel message was proclaimed.

Praise and Prayer Requests

1. Praise God that the group in Tung Pru continues to study with us.
2. Pray for both the adults and children in Tung Pru to understand the Bible lessons and become part of God’s family.
3. Pray that Kwan, Upa, and Buay will come to know God even though they have moved back to Na-corn-See-Tom-ma-rot (ending our seeker group in Blai Praya).
4. Praise God for those who helped us with Christmas programs in the junior & senior high schools.
5. Pray that God’s spirit will draw many (both teachers and students) who saw the school Christmas program to God.
6. Pray for workers to help us with Children’s Day on January 10th and much seed sowing with the books we hand out will bear fruit.
7. Pray for God to give us wisdom as we teach English to Blai Praya police, and give us many natural opportunities to proclaim the Gospel with them.
